But I see no conflict in requiring government, etc. to act fairly while not doing so ourselves. We are human and, hopefully, empathetic. Government and other institutions is not human and not capable of empathy, so we should require it to act in a rational fashion so as to not disadvantage people unfairly. In fact, I think progressive people combine both these attributes - we're empathetic to those in our families and social circles, but switch to a rational and fair moral system when dealing with larger groups and larger problems.<br /><br />In fact, I think empathy runs out of steam at some point - I know I tend to suffer a kind of "compassion fatigue" when the news brings a run of natural and man-made disasters affecting thousands.<br /><br />Always love a story about the cuddle hormone, though. ;)<br /><br />(Hah! I definatley see how his argument works for family on up to tribes and clans, you know small scale societies. But what are large scale societies like nations?
